Fun Facts:
The official Olympic motto, "Faster, Higher, Stronger," introduced in 1924, got a modern twist in 2021 with the addition of "Together," becoming "Faster, Higher, Stronger — Together." This motto’s spirit of improvement and excellence mirrors the vibe of Daft Punk’s hit song “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,” which pumps up the same energy of pushing limits. While Daft Punk’s track isn't directly related to the Olympics, both share a groovy theme of pushing boundaries and enhancing performance!
On August 2nd, we celebrate the birthday of Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, a true pioneer in Indian science! Often hailed as the "Father of Indian Chemistry," Ray (1861-1944) was a trailblazing scientist who studied at the University of Edinburgh and later made significant contributions while at Presidency College and Calcutta University.
In 1895, he discovered the stable compound Mercurous Nitrite.
He founded the Bengal Chemical and Pharmaceutical Works in 1901 to boost Indian industry and was a fierce advocate of the Swadeshi Movement, viewing foreign goods as a betrayal of India. Ray was also a champion of social reform, fighting against the caste system and other outdated practices. His achievements earned him honors from the British Government, including a knighthood in 1919, and he was elected General President of the Indian Science Congress in 1920. To commemorate his legacy, India Post issued a stamp in his honor on August 2, 1961.

National War Memorial:
The National War Memorial in New Delhi, located at India Gate Circle, honors Indian Armed Forces personnel who fought in conflicts after India's independence. It commemorates those who died in wars with Pakistan and China, the 1961 Goa conflict, Operation Pawan, Operation Rakshak, and other operations, with their names inscribed in golden letters.
Previously, the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate served as the national war memorial. Constructed rapidly after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 per Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's directive, it was inaugurated on January 26, 1972, to honor the soldiers who fought in the Bangladesh Liberation War. The Amar Jawan Jyoti, or "flame of the immortal soldier," served as India's tomb of the unknown soldier, with wreaths placed on Republic Day, Vijay Diwas, and Infantry Day by top officials.
On January 21, 2022, the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate was merged with the National War Memorial.
