Photograph of the day:
I had the opportunity to visit the National Craft Museum in Delhi, which showcases Bhuta artworks. Bhuta refers to massive wooden statues found in Indian crafts. These sculptures represent spirits of deceased ancestors who have attained divinity after death.
In the southern Karnataka region, nearly every village boasts a Bhutasthana, where images of deities or revered figures are intricately carved from Jackfruit tree trunks and installed either on a platform or beneath a thatched hut, forming a Bhuta temple. These deities are regularly venerated through offerings of water and flowers.
Over time, some of these folk gods and goddesses have been integrated into mainstream Hinduism and Jainism. In Hinduism, Bhutas are explicitly associated with Lord Shiva; for instance, Virabhadra is considered one of Shiva's Ganas. Shiva's consort Gauri is revered as Gauramma, and his mount Nandi is worshipped as Nandikeshwar.
