Fun Facts:
How Japanese have produced wood for 700 years, without cutting down trees?
Daisugi is a 14th-century Japanese forestry technique developed in the Kitayama region to address a shortage of saplings. By pruning cedar trees in a special manner, straight, knot-free lumbers were produced. The shoots were hand-pruned every two years, allowing them to grow vertically. It took 20 years to harvest, with old trees generating up to a hundred shoots. Besides addressing resource scarcity, daisugi emerged to meet the demand for sukiya-zukuri architecture. This technique yields wood 140% more flexible, 200% denser, and stronger than standard cedar, with exceptional durability.

Did you know? In Ethiopia, a 35-mile crack that appeared in 2005 is creating a new ocean!
This phenomenon is caused by three tectonic plates pulling apart, forming a unique laboratory for studying tectonic processes. It's estimated to take 5 to 10 million years for the new ocean to form. Excitingly, the region's location at the convergence of the Nubian, Somali, and Arabian plates provides valuable insights into these geological transformations.
Photograph of the day:
Today, I come bearing not just one, but four photographs showcasing the resplendent beauty of Mughal architecture!
The Red Taj, also known as the Tomb of John William Hessing, is a lesser-known monument located in Agra, India, just in front of the iconic Taj Mahal. The Red Taj was constructed in memory of John William Hessing, a Dutch soldier who served in the army of Maharaja Daulat Rao Scindia of Gwalior, was killed in battle in 1803 during the Second Anglo-Maratha War. His wife, Ann Hessing, commissioned the construction of the mausoleum to honor her husband's memory.
The Red Taj stands as a poignant symbol of love and remembrance, quietly commemorating the life of John William Hessing and showcasing the architectural diversity present in India's rich heritage.
It is also one of the few European-style tombs in India, standing out amidst the predominantly Mughal architecture in the region.
Stay tuned for my next photo of the Taj Mahal!
